Bans, what bans?

Who needs a ban option when you’ve got the Miserable Users mod for you forum?

When classed as miserable, a member suffers ;

1. Slow response (time delay) on every page (20 to 60 seconds default).
2. A chance they will get the “server busy” message (50% by default).
3. A chance that no search facilities will be available (75% by default).
4. A chance they will get redirected to another preset page (25% & homepage by default).
5. A chance they will simply get a blank page (25% by default).
6. Post flood limit increased by a defined factor (10 times by default).
7. If they get past all this okay, then they will be served up their proper page.

I can’t wait to actually use it on someone.

Site Graphics

Just worked on a few new buttons and a header for my site. Spent ages cutting ouch each individual letter, as I don’t have the font file.

It looks a hell of a lot better now.

CSS3 RGBA

Trying to make a new skin for my forum that includes some element of the new CSS3 RGBA tag. It’s proving a little bothersome right now, as some of the elements are just showing up as black for some reason.
I’ll give it a go while combining it with some PNG transparent images for the troublesome areas, see how that works out.

Also need to get started on the Wiki stylesheet, reading up on it now, it looks like it should be relatively easy, but I’m probably just being wildly optimistic.

Also also, having a look at JQuery, trying to teach myself some things to make my site a little more interesting and interactive.

Changes to forum site

I thought it might be worth listing all the changes I’ve made to my site from the standard forum and wiki installs.

Forums:

  • Changed style from default blue to custom grey style.
  • Added new forms to user profiles, then edited postbit php template to show those new forms under users names when they post.
  • Removed navbar and made new one using horizontal list, editted stylesheet and header php template to include the new navbar.
  • Added some new icons, with more to come.
  • Changed image library from GD to Imagemagick.
  • Added custom BB code (Youtube integration)
  • Created custom VBA frontpage modules.

Wiki:

  • Enabled short URL’s hack by changing some php and .htaccess file.
  • Changed front page from “main page” to “love wiki” for the sake of SEO.
  • Disabled anonymous editing.

There are, of course, more changes to come.

Custom navbar buttons

Just added some custom navbar links to my VBulletin forum.

It wasn’t quite as tough as I’d thought, just a case of making custom CSS code for the horizontal list and then chopping out unnecessary parts from the navbar php template and adding my custom code in there. Now there aren’t any more superfluous links, and people should be able to find the Wiki link, what with the great big fucking “Wiki” button.

Strangely, it appears my code is no longer validating, so I’ll have to take a look at what exactly is causing that, hopefully it’s an easy fix.

Here’s an example of what the navbar used to look like. Here’s what it looks like now.

Vimeo Website

I really like the curved tabs Vimeo uses. They look great, almost friendly.

Vimeo

I also really like the strong, contrasting colours they’ve chosen, both for the site and the tabs.

Shoddy Design

If you’re going to tout yourself as a web designer, at least make sure the images you use for your tabs line up correctly with the text behind them.

As seen here.

What an idiot.

Arrow Tabs

Something I think was missed on the list Mark showed us, but I’ve noticed a lot of it. Using arrows on tabs to show which page you’re currently at, rather than hanging the background colour, or putting an underline on the text or something similar.

Not much to report

Haven’t got much to report lately, things over on my forums have been slowing down a bit, which seems natural, now that the initial excitement about Love has dropped a little, but things are still going smoothly. There are still many things I’d like to change on the site that I shall be working on.

We did some compositing work in E3D last week that I’ll upload here when my internet seems to be running faster than dial-up, it was certainly an interesting thing to do, and I can see many interesting applications for it.

Work on my game idea seems to be running ok right now, just waiting for my tablet to arrive to speed things up, DHL are absolutely shit couriers, I’ll make sure I never get anything delivered from them again.
