Trying to find the perfect image gallery is proving to be tough. I’m going to make my own using the JQuery Cycle plugin. This should prove to be a lot better than the current WordPress plugin I’m using, however, that comes with the added strain of it being relatively complicated to use. That’s not a problem for me, but it could prove to be a problem for Giuseppe. I’ll have to make sure I document how to use it properly.
I guess I can always see how easy it is to make a WordPress plugin…
In other news, I’ve been experimenting with web fonts, just for important text areas, such as the main site header and h tags within the pages. I’ve so far looked at Google’s font API, however I’m not a big fan of the fonts they’ve got, so I’ll take a look at what fonts.com and typekit have to offer in this market. I’ve also been playing with Lettering.js, so that I can have fine kerning control over the main site header.
As you can see, this gives me the option of changing the margin-left/right of every single letter in the title, meaning I have very tight kerning control. It also means I can play about with different hover effects on a per-letter basis, though I’m not going to do that for this site.
I had a number of problems getting that working, but after consulting one of the moderators on the StudioPress forums, I was pointed towards an easy fix, that being that WordPress has to load JQuery scripts in no-conflict mode. A simple script fix solved that problem and it’s all now working properly.
All that’s left really is to get the gallery working properly, find a good font for the header and then all the innumerable small details that really liven up the site for end users.
